Several local golfers were among the field in last week’s Maine Junior Amateur golf tournament.

While there were no local winners, Ryan Gay (Augusta), Henry Fall (Topsham), Reese McFarlane (Cape Elizabeth) and Alexa Rancourt (South Portland) all won their divisions at last week’s 71st annual event at the Val Halla Golf Club in Cumberland.

Gay won the 15-17 age group with a semifinal victory over David Gushee of Gorham followed by a 6 and 5 match win over Will Delano of York.

Fall won the 13-14 age division with a semifinal victory over Quinn Allen of Bridgton and a 4 and 3 match win in the final over Seth Sweet (Madison).

The 10-year-old McFarlane topped Sam Grindle (Deer Isle) in the semifinals before earning his title with a 3 and 1 win over Red Desmith (Yarmouth) in the final.

And Rancourt claimed the girls division crown with a semifinal victory over Danielle Willey (Auburn) and a win over Kate Merrill (Portland) in the final.

Quinn Allen, who plays out of the Bridgton Highlands course, reached the semifinals in the 13-14-year-old division before getting bumped from the tourney. Allen fired a 78 in the opening round of stroke play on Tuesday, Aug. 7. That score gave him the No. 2 seed in the next day’s match play round in his age division.

Allen went about his business knocking off Devin Merritt (York) by a 4 and 3 score in the round of 16 and he followed that up by defeating Connor Burfeind (Woodlands) 1-up in the quarterfinals.

Windham golfer in the hunt at Maine Open

Windham’s Shawn Warren was just two shots back after Tuesday’s first round of the Maine Open being held at the Fox Ridge Golf Club in Auburn. Warren’s 71 trails left him in third place entering Wednesday’s second round of play.

Other area golfers playing in this week’s Maine Open include Dave Grygiel of Windham (74), Dan Falcone of Bridgton (75), Brandon Wohl of Windham (81), and Benjamin Morey of Windham (82).
