Volunteers needed

The town of Gorham is seeking volunteers to fill vacancies on several boards and committees.

Appointments are available for the Zoning Board of Appeals/ Board of Sewer Appeals, Park and Conservation Commission, Recycling Committee, Fair Hearing Board, Cable Television Committee, Board of Health and Board of Assessment Review.

First day of school approaching

Jim Hager, chairman of the Gorham School Committee, has announced school fall start dates.

Hager said Grades kindergarten through 9 begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4; Grades 10 through 12 start on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 3.

Francoeur family reunion

The Francoeur family will have a reunion 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9, at Wassamki Springs Campground, 56 Saco St., Scarborough. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 16.

Those attending are asked to take their own lunches ( a grill will be available) and lawn chairs. The reunion will include aunts, uncles and cousins with lots of fun and games for all.

The cost is $6 each; $3, children; free, children under 5.

Willett law school grad

Beth Ann Willett of Gorham graduated from law school at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., in May.

Willett is the daughter of Town Councilor Jane Stinchfield Willett, 10 Valley View Drive, and Daniel Willett, 41 Gateway Commons.

Brush up on painting

An acrylic painting workshop, offered by South Portland artist Ruth Gorton in collaboration with The Art Guru of Gorham, will be held at their Main Street location in Gorham on Wednesday from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.

Topics will include hands-on use of traditional and non-traditional methods and materials and basic color theory. This program, which is intended for the beginner or intermediate artist, places an emphasis on learning in a supportive and non-competitive environment.

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on

Aug. 8 that the U.S. public debt was $8,941,971,085,356.53.
