Scarborough A 3

Yarmouth 1

The Scarborough A 9-10 year old All Star team slipped by Yarmouth Friday night by a score of 3-1. In a very evenly played game in which both teams struggled at the plate, it came down to solid pitching and good fielding.

Scarborough starter Garrett McDonald pitched 4 1/3 innings recording eight strikeouts, two hits, one walk, and one run. Lefty Austin Pemberton closed the game with four strikeouts, two walks, no hits and no runs. Ben Irish had another good performance behind the plate catching, throwing out two Yarmouth players at third base attempting to steal.

Infielders Matt Gedaro, Jack Vincent, Nate Wessel, and Matt Hartl got the job done on grounders. While Ben Bragg, Sam Freeman, Nick Kelley, Zach Carriero, and Cam Brochu snagged fly balls in the outfield with a steady wind blowing in from center field.

Offensively Scarborough had seven hits and three walks. Hartl went 3 for 4 and McDonald was 2 for 4 to lead the way. Vincent, Freeman, and McDonald crossed the plate to score the runs.

Scarborough A 13

Suburban (Cumberland) 2

Saturday, July 7 was a damp but nice night to play under the lights, and the Scarborough A 9-10 year old All Star team had a nice night, soundly beating Suburban by a 13-2 score. Scarborough posted 10 runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back.

Starting pitcher Matt Hartl went the distance, throwing 66 pitches in four innings on a shortened game due to the mercy rule. Hartl recorded four strikeouts, one walk, three hits and two runs. Catcher Zach Carriero was solid behind the plate and held the Suburban base runners at bay with his quick feet and strong arm.

Hartl had plenty of infield support from Austin Pemberton, Garrett McDonald, Nate Wessel, and Jack Vincent. The group fielded eight put outs on balls to the infield.

Outfielders Nick Kelley, Cam Brochu, Sam Freeman, Matt Gedaro, Ben Irish, and Ben Bragg got the job done beyond the bases. Brochu made a nice grab on a high fly ball in the second inning.

Offensively, Scarborough was led by McDonald, who went 3 for 3 with a single, double, and a triple for four RBI’s. Scarborough had seven hits, nine walks and one batter hit by a pitch as well as capitalizing on good base running to score the 13 runs.

At 3-0, Scarborough A advances to the semi-finals and played undefeated Deering July 11 in Buxton, after the Current’s deadline. The winner of that game was set to move on to the district championship on July 14.
