Falmouth defeats Windham, 5-0
Delorme Field in Yarmouth was the site of the first games in the 2007 District 6 Little League 11 and 12-year old All Star double-elimination tournament. The first saw Falmouth advance past Windham on the stellar pitching performance of Ryan McDonald, who threw a complete game shutout with eight strikeouts and only five hits. The Falmouth All-Stars moved on to play against South Portland American on July 1st.
The Falmouth bats gave McDonald a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The hitting continued in the second, as a double for Ryan Conley drove in Grayson Barresi for another run.
Only once in the game did Windham come close to staging a rally, that being in the third inning. With no outs and runners on first and second, Windham attempted a sacrifice bunt in order to advance both runners into scoring position. Instead, the bunt was popped up, McDonald made a “Web Gem”-esque diving catch and threw out the runner at second. McDonald then induced a pop out, finishing the inning and keeping Windham from gaining any momentum.
In the fifth, McDonald again helped out his own cause by hitting a two-run double. It was this hit that knocked the Windham starter, Kyle Gilman, out of the game, to be replaced by Cody Dube.
After giving up a hit to Alex Larrabee to start the sixth inning, McDonald proceeded to strike out the side, finishing the game in convincing fashion.
Other Windham players with hits, along with Larrabee, were Shawn Franceur, Christian Coons, Kyle Gilman, and Mitchell Hodge. Windham fell to the second bracket, and faced Freeport on July 1st in the double-elimination tournament.
South Portland National advances over Freeport, 7-4
Desjardins gets three hits; Cloutier hits home run in victory
Dominic Desjardins and Andrew Cloutier provided the offense and Jacob Cyr-Carter provided the pitching, as South Portland National defeated Freeport, 7-4 to advance to the second round of the 11 and 12-year-old All Star tournament on Saturday at Delorme Field in Yarmouth. Cyr-Carter gave up all four runs and struck out seven to earn the win. William Bushey came in the game in the top of the sixth inning and earned a save for South Portland National.
Desjardins had three hits in the game and scored a run in the third inning, Cloutier hit a home run in the fourth, Bushey hit a two run double and scored two runs along with earning a save, and Neil Maietta hit a double and scored on a double steal to contribute to South Portland National’s offensive attack.
After a scoreless first inning, Freeport scored first in the second and was up 2-0 after their half of the inning was complete. Parker Matheson had a base hit, and Connor Dietrich hit a double to put both runners in scoring position. Matheson scored on a wild pitch, and Dietrich scored soon after, when Cyr-Carter attempted a pick-off play that went awry.
South Portland National slowly began to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the second. Simon McQuinn pinch ran for Aaron Flowers, after Flowers was hit by a pitch. McQuinn scored on a double from Benjamin Burkey, making the score 2-1. They went ahead in the bottom of the third when Desjardins tied the game on McQuinn’s RBI single, and William Bushey’s two-run double, making the score 4-2.
On the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth, Andrew Cloutier ripped a fastball to left field to put South Portland National up 5-2. The entire team was there at the plate to greet Cloutier as if he channeled the energy of David Ortiz and hit a walk-off. However, not to be shown up, Freeport starter Connor Dietrich responded by quickly striking out the next two hitters.
Freeport came within one run in the top of the fifth, when Dan Burke scored on a sac fly, and Nick Cartmell scored on Parker Matheson’s second hit of the game. Yet with the score now 5-4, South Portland National increased their lead to 6-4 on Maietta’s RBI double. Maietta later scored in the inning on a double steal, finalizing the scoring at 7-4.
With the victory, South Portland National advanced to the second round of the tournament, and will face Cumberland on July 6th.
