Buxton selectmen are accepting names of people interested in filling the vacancy left when a school board member resigned last week.

Jean Harmon, newly elected chairwoman of selectmen, said this week that selectmen would appoint someone to replace Sandra G. Plummer until next year’s municipal election in June. Plummer resigned June 19 as one of Buxton’s four directors of School Administrative District 6.

Contacted after submitting a resignation letter to selectmen, Plummer cited health issues as a major concern prompting her resignation and said it wasn’t an easy decision to make. “It’s a job on top of a full-time job,” said Plummer.

She was re-elected in June last year to a three-year SAD 6 term. Next spring, nomination papers will be available for candidates seeking election to the remaining year of her term.

Plummer had served 10 years as an SAD 6 director. “I would like to thank people for the support they’ve given me,” Plummer said.

Before resigning, Plummer nominated Cindy Hazelton of Buxton, who was elected as chairwoman of SAD 6, on June 18. She said Hazelton would do a “fabulous” job.

During her tenure, Plummer saw planning for a new school become reality. In May, voters in SAD 6 towns approved a $28 million elementary school to be built in Buxton Center. Plummer supported the new school, which replaces four existing Buxton elementary schools. “(It’s) a huge win for the town and the district,” Plummer said.

The new school leaves fate of the S.D. Hanson Elementary School, a former Buxton High School, undecided. Plummer advocates forming a committee to explore innovative ideas for the old school and its gym. “I feel there could be a use for it,” Plummer said.
