Surf Camp, which has operated at Scarborough Beach for the past five years, has launched a scholarship initiative to bring in students who otherwise might not be able to afford summer camp.

The normal camp cost is $400, which includes a week of surfing instruction from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. However, after extending the number of camp sessions from five to nine this summer, the owner, David Turin, decided to establish a scholarship program. The program will allow kids and teens from ages 10 to 16 to attend a full week of camp for as low as $75.

Turin, a surf instructor as well, said that making spots in camp available for scholarship students “allows the awarded campers a chance to get out of the house and onto the beach, when they otherwise wouldn’t have had the chance. It’s good for everyone.”

Scholarships will be awarded based on various factors including financial need and an essay by the camper titled, “Why I Want to Learn to Surf.” Kids and parents interested in attending should visit Surf Camp’s Web site and apply for a scholarship online at www.surfcampME.com. Campers can also sign up by calling 423.1986.
