Kennebunk tops Cape
The Kennebunk boys lacrosse team ended Cape Elizabeth’s season with an 8-5 win at the West B regional championship last week.
Kennebunk took a 2-0 lead before Cape’s Tyler Loring scored a pair of goals to tie the score at 2-2. The Rams again pulled ahead holding a 5-2 edge midway through the second period.
Two more scores from Loring got Cape within 5-4 with two minutes left to play in the first half.
Cape goalie Eric Knight made several key third quarter stops to keep his team one goal back. Zach Belden scored the equalizer with 1:51 left in the third and Cape suddenly had some momentum and a chance to take the lead.
The Capers had possession of the ball for a long six-minute stretch at the start of the fourth quarter. Cape dictated play for most of that final period, but they were unable to score and break the 5-5 tie.
Kennebunk finally gained control of the ball with just under five minutes to play and got the go-ahead goal both teams were searching for. The Rams took a 6-5 lead with 4:36 to play and an ensuing penalty on Cape gave Kennebunk the ball at mid-field. Without the usual face-off, the Rams took advantage and scored another goal 18 seconds later for a 7-5 lead. They would add one other at the 2:47 mark.
Bulldogs stop Storm
The Portland boys lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal first half deficit to upset top-seeded Scarborough last week.
The Storm (13-2) had leads of 4-1 and 5-2 before the Bulldogs rallied with five unanswered goals in the second period to take a 7-5 advantage at the half.
“We ran our offense and controlled play (during most of the first half),” said Scarborough coach Tobey Farrington. “The defense was under control.”
Portland (12-3) expanded their lead to 12-8 with a pair of late scores by Scarborough getting the Red Storm within 12-10.
Ryan Hunt led the Storm with three goals and Chris Kipp and Jake Barrett added two goals each.
