The Scarborough boys lacrosse team continued their march toward another state final appearance. The Storm erupted for 10 goals in the second half of Saturday’s West A semifinal against South Portland to take a 17-6 win over the No. 4 Red Riots (9-5).
The two rivals battled for the entire first half with neither team able to gain a sizeable lead on the other. Scarborough led 7-5 at the break before breaking the game open in the second half.
“We settled the offense and stoppped trying to take shots that were not there,” explained Scarborough coach Toby Farrington. “We really
forced it in the first half. Defensively, we got back to basics. We started playing better position and tried to only give them outside shots. In the
first half we gave them some lay-ups.”
Ryan Hunt led the Red Storm with eight goals. And teammates Andy Clark and Jake Barrett added three goals each.
Scarborough goalie Phil Lambert finished with five saves.
For South Portland, Eugene Arsenault scored four of his team’s six goals.
“Their team was simply deeper in talent and (deeper in) athletes,” said South Portland coach Michael Edgar. “We were tied for much of the first half, but those two late goals (in the second quarter) hurt. We really needed to take advantage of their early sloppiness, but we were equally sloppy. We needed to go into the third quarter with a lead.
“We also lost ground balls by a 2 to 1 ratio and you don’t often win games without winning ground balls.”
Top-seeded Scarborough was scheduled to play second-seeded Portland on Wednesday, June 13, for the West A title. The winner advances to the Class A state championship game at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland on Saturday at 10 a.m.
The Storm defeated the Bulldogs by a 15-6 score back on May 1.
