The Cape Elizabeth boy’s lacrosse team defeated the Greely in semi-final action 12-2 on Saturday, setting up a finals match up between the no. 2 ranked Cape team against the no. 1 ranked team in Western Maine Class B lacrosse, Kennebunk, on June 13 at Kennebunk High School.

After no. 6 Greely team upset no. 3 Falmouth 8-7 in OT to advance to the semi-finals, they looked to continue their momentum on Cape’s home field. Cape took advantage of the home field edge, using a balanced offense to control the pacing and tempo of the game throughout to handily eliminate Greely.

“We played OK,” said Cape head coach Ben Raymond. “It’s certainly nice to move on. It’ll be back to practice on Monday, and we hope to be sharper next week.”

Cape was ahead 4-1 after the first period, with senior captains Brendan Nicholas, and Tyler Loring scoring early. Junior Zach Belden also scored in the first.

Cape looked to continue scoring at their frantic pace in the second period, but Greely shut down the Cape offense during the second, and went into halftime still only down 4-1.

“Their defense was good for a little while,” said Raymond. “We threw the ball away a lot, plus the (Greely) goalie (junior Jake Groom) made about eight saves against us. Starting the second half, we knew we had to play better.”

Cape opened up the third period by scoring less than two minutes in. The scoring against Greely was unrelenting, as sophomore Mike Holden, and juniors Jim Wilcox and Mike Ott helped Cape jump out to a commanding 8-1 lead. Numerous penalties against Greely in the third, including unnecessary roughness and illegal conduct, didn’t help matters either.

The penalties on Greely continued into the fourth, as the officials called an unsportsmanlike conduct against them only a minute and a half into the period. Cape pounced on the opportunity and scored four unanswered goals to put one-sided affair away. Ott and Beldon both scored their second goals of the game in the fourth period. Sophomores Ben Lydon and Johnny Messina, also contributed on the scoring. Cape Elizabeth finished the final three minutes of the game by controlling the ball and killing time behind the Greely net.

The Greely goals were scored by junior midfielder Eric Thompson in the first period and by senior attack Andrew Cole in the third.
