A 2-1 loss to top-seeded Deering ended South Portland’s tournament run in the West A quarterfinals on Thursday, June 7, at Hadlock Field in Portland.

The No. 8 Red Riots (9-8) went to the fifth inning in a 0-0 tie before the Rams scored single runs in the home half of that frame and another in the sixth for a 2-0 advantage. South Portland pulled within one with a run in the top of the seventh but Deering held off the Riots’ late charge for the win.

Matt Findlay had two of the Riots’ five hits in the game. Starter Will Furbush pitched well for South Portland before getting relief help from Christopher Gorham in the fifth inning.

Pitcher Coleman Findlay blanked Biddeford for a 4-0 victory in a West A prelim on Tuesday, June 5. It was Findlay’s fifth win of the year as he allowed the Tigers just four hits in seven innings of work.

Matt Lee led the South Portland batting order with three hits. Will Furbush and Montana Colby each added a pair of hits.

“I thought we had an outstanding season,” said South Portland coach Tony DiBiase. “With some key players back and a strong underclass we should be a strong team for next season.”
