As the Little League regular season heads into the final week, Tickets Unlimited has opened up a two-game lead with only two games to go. The Tickets’ winning streak is now at 11 as they seek the top seed in the upcoming playoffs.
Tickets defeated Messer Trucking last week with an 8-0 win backed by another great pitching performance by Mike Pena. He went the distance striking out nine while allowing only two hits.
On the offensive end, Derek Bouchard had three hits while Andrew McCarthy hit a two-run homer – his fourth of the season. Garrett McCarthy had two key bunts and two RBI.
For Messer, Kyle Schumacher had a triple and rookie John Tibbets had a double. Austin Watts did a fine job pitching for Messer.
An improved Phoenix Welding team gave Tickets a great game. The difference was a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning by Mike Pena to give Tickets the 5-3 victory.
Arthur Plaisted, Kyle Heath, Jon Doucette, Zack Wescott, and Josh Cote all had big hits for a very scrappy Phoenix team. Jeremiah Steele made a key relief appearance getting out of a bases loaded jam to keep Tickets in the game early.
Messer remained in second place by defeating the Lions 5-3 as Andrew St Clair and Ian King led the way. They both pitched three good innings and combined for five hits. St Clair had two doubles and King had three hits (double, triple, and an inside the park home run).
Kiwanis moved into a third place tie with Sappi by defeating them 5-2. Kiwanis touched up pitchers Hazlewood, Lamson and Lowe while holding the potent Sappi offense to just two runs. Tyler Rawding turned in the defensive play of the game for Sappi.
Both teams are currently in the running for a top spot with identical records of 9-4. In their other game, Sappi pounded the Eagles 10-0 behind the pitching of Kaleb Kent and Keenen Lowe who combined for the shutout.
Repeat hitters for Sappi were Cameron McLain, Zach Boucher, Alex Hazlewood, Josh Ames and Kent. Ethan Nash and Cale Bollig were repeat hitters for the Eagles.
In a marathon, it was Kiwanis defeating the Eagles 4-3 in 11 innings. Kiwanis jumped on the board early with two runs in the second inning and one in the fifth. Kevin Grescoviak had two base hits.
The Eagles tied the game in the sixth on base hits by Dylan Dale and Cale Bollig followed by a three-run homer by Chandler Todd. Kiwanis won the game in the bottom of the 11th on base hits by Noah Collins and Derek Breunig.
The Eagles only win of the week came against Dairy Queen, 10-1. Brenden Richardson, Chandler Todd and Paul Patriotti combined for a one-hitter, while Todd led the way offensively with three hits. John O’Hara had the only hit for DQ, a long towering home run.
Action continues Monday through Friday at the Little League complex with all games beginning at 5:30 p.m. The 2007 playoffs are scheduled to begin on Saturday, June 9, with two games at 11 a.m. and two more at 2 p.m.
