The Scarborough softball team continues to overcome any obstacles placed in its path – even those that are self-created – as the Storm raced to the SMAA League title last Friday with wins over Deering and Biddeford. The top four teams in the league met at Scarborough to decide the SMAA championship.
The Storm (18-0) committed five errors in a semifinal win against Deering (13-4) and they used a five RBI performance from senior Meaghan Myers to top the Rams by a 7-4 score. Myers gave her team an early lead with a two-run homer in the first inning and she added a two-run double in the second followed by a run-scoring single in the sixth.
Kelsey Griffin went the distance on the mound scattering seven hits and striking out six.
The four runs by Deering were the most runs any team has scored on the Storm this season. Scarborough had shutout 13 of their previous 16 opponents while only allowing a total of four runs during the regular season.
The win over Deering set up a championship final against Biddeford – a 2-0 winner against South Portland in the other semifinal. Scarborough pitcher Caitlin LeBorgne was in control throughout allowing just one hit and striking out nine en route to a 4-0 win over the Tigers. Biddeford is now 16-2 with both losses coming at the hands of Scarborough.
The Storm’s Heather Carrier singled home Sarah Bonefant in the second inning with the only run they’d need. Griffin added a pair of hits including a double that scored Victoria Joyce in the fourth inning.
The Western Maine Class A softball tournament was scheduled to get underway on Tuesday with prelim round games. Scarborough is the top seed in the region and they will play a quarterfinal against either No. 8 Windham or No. 9 Portland on Thursday, June 7.
No. 3 Cape in West B quarterfinal
The Cape Elizabeth softball team ended its regular season with five straight wins giving the Capers a 13-3 record and the No. 3 seed in the West B tournament.
Cape is scheduled to host a quarterfinal on Thursday, June 7, against either No. 6 Maranacook or No. 11 Poland. Regional semifinals will be played on Saturday.
