Chase award nominee

Ethelyn S. Chase will be nominated by the Westbrook Woman’s Club for the Jennie Award contest through the General Federation of Women’s Club/Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs.

One member will be selected from the state to be nominated for the New England region contest.

Chase, Liza Harmon Drive, joined the Westbrook club in 1950 and was club president from 1958 to 1960. She served as president of District 12 in 1984-1985 and again in 1997-1998. In 2002, she was awarded honorary member status, but she continues to be active in all club activities. She is currently club historian, a position she has held for many years, and chairwoman of the legislative committee.

She served the the General Federation of Women’s Club/Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs as recording secretary; chairwoman of both the endowment and delegates funds; and she is currently the necrologist. She served on two committees of the New England board.

Chase is a charter member and honorary member of the Westbrook Historical Society and a life member of Eastern Star Mizpah Chapter No. 3. She continues to be active in these organizations and in the Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church.

Also, she is historian for her Westbrook High School graduating class and a council member for the Southern Maine Agency on Aging. She was once a candidate for city clerk in Westbrook and, although she did not win, her interest in local and state politics remains strong, the woman’s club said.

Chase received the Golden Eaglet Award and the Silver Trefoil Life Membership Award for her work with the Girl Scouts. She enjoys writing essays and poetry, which have won awards.

She was a member of the committee that compiled the “Highlights of Westbrook History,” and she submitted the winning name, Presumpscot Commons, when the old Westbrook High School was converted to senior housing.

Whitlock scholarship winner

The University of Maine Foundation recently announced that Alyssa Whitlock is the recipient of the Henry and Marjorie Saunders Scholarship.

Whitlock is the daughter of Gina and Michael Whitlock of Westbrook.

The $3,000 scholarship is awarded annually for excellence in high school academic and leadership activities. The scholarship is funded in perpetuity with the University of Maine Foundation and was established in 2001.

The scholarship is named for the Saunders family, long-time active Westbrook citizens.

The scholarship is awarded to a student who is academically strong, exemplifies the spirit of excellence and in the top 20 percent of the class with an SAT of 1,100 (critical reading and math) or greater. The student must be a Westbrook resident and also attend the flagship campus of the university in Orono.

Firefighters to face Red Sox alumni

The Westbrook All Star Firefighters will take the field against the Boston Red Sox alumni in a benefit softball game at 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, at Fraser Field in Westbrook.

Tickets, $10, will be available on game day. Proceeds will be directed toward fire training safety, burn center victims, food baskets, turkey dinners and needy children.

Transportation honors Gleason

Jim Gleason has been chosen as employee of the year for the Department of Transportation for Westbrook schools.

“He had been chosen as a past Employee of the Month and the staff had a secret ballot drawing of all previous winners of the Employee of the Month,” Penny Esposito, director of transportation, said recently.
