The Scarborough boys lost their first game of the season on Thursday, May 31, when they dropped a 6-4 decision to Kennebunk. Jake Barrett scored three times for the Red Storm.
The two teams are each respectively ranked No. 1 in Class A and Class B. The Rams are the top seed in Western Maine Class B while Scarborough sits atop Western Maine Class A.
The Red Storm will begin their title defense on Saturday, June 9, against the winner of the South Portland/Thornton Academy quarterfinal. (Scarborough was also the top seed in last year’s tourney when they won the Class A state championship.)
The defending state champion Scarborough girls’ lacrosse team dropped their regular season finale, 14-11, to Cheverus. Ellie Morin and Marissa Hebert each had three goals for the Red Storm in a game played on Friday, June 1 at Scarborough.
The Storm finished the season at 7-5 and entered this year’s West A tournament as the No. 2 seed.
Scarborough was scheduled to host a quarterfinal game with Thornton Academy (5-7) on Wednesday, June 6. The winner will play either No. 6 Westbrook or No. 3 Marshwood in a regional semifinal on Saturday.
Cape teams ready for quarterfinal play
The Cape Elizabeth boys’ lacrosse team (8-4) won their final regular season game on Wednesday, May 30, by a 14-6 score over Freeport. The win halted a two-game slide for the Capers and they entered this year’s West B tournament as the No. 2 seed.
Mike Holden led the way for Cape with seven goals and two assists. John Hayes and Jim Wilcox each had a pair of goals as Cape raced to a 10-1 lead in the first half.
Cape was scheduled to begin tournament play against No. 7 York (6-6) on Wednesday, June 6. The winner moves on to face either No. 6 Greely or No. 3 Falmouth in a regional semifinal on Saturday.
The Cape Elizabeth girls dropped two straight games to end their regular season. They suffered a 15-7 setback in their last game.
Jill Smith and Haley Stanfield each scored three goals and the Capers enter the West B tournament with a record of 6-6.
Cape is the No. 6 seed for the regional tourney and they were scheduled to play at No. 3 Waynflete on Wednesday, June 6.
SP boys prepared for playoffs
The South Portland boys won their regular season finale against Cheverus, 14-11. Eugene Arsenault had six goals and four assists for the Riots.
South Portland trailed 4-0 early in the first half before rallying to take a 7-6 lead at the break. Ben Linscott contributed four goals and an assist and Sean Murray had two goals and three assists.
The Red Riots opened the West A tournament as the No. 4 seed and they were scheduled to take on No. 5 Thornton Academy on Wednesday, June 6, in quarterfinal action.
The South Portland girls (4-8) lost their season finale to Thornton Academy by a 12-5 margin. The Red Riots missed out on the playoffs by just a few percentage points, ending the season in ninth place in the West A standings.
Sharon Johnson scored two goals in the loss to the Trojans.
