This building at 917 Main St. was built in the 1840s to serve as a Universalist church. The original front had pillars and exterior stairs leading into the main floor. The building served as a church until a new one was constructed at 719 Main St. in 1887. This building was sold and served many different businesses over the years, including a stove shop, Star Laundry, Westbrook Tire & Appliance Co.,, Pyrofax Gas Co. (left photo), Montgomery-Ward Catalog Store, Tots to Teens Clothing & Toys and My Sisters Closet Consignment Store. Now vacant, the building is for sale. Interestingly, traces of the original church can still be seen on the second floor.
