The Scarborough girls’ track team scored 122.70 points in a dominant performance in Saturday’s SMAA track and field championship. The Red Storm won three events and were near the head of the pack in several others.
The first win of the day for the Storm came in the day’s first event, the 4×800 meter relay. The Scarborough girls finished with a time of 10:06.76, about 15 seconds faster than the closest challenger. The Red Storm’s 4×400 meter relay team also took top honors with a time of 4:13.42.
Kaitlynn Saldanha and Devon Leighton also won their events for the Red Storm. Saldhana was the victor in the 800 meter run, with a time of 2:22.49. Saldhana also finished second in the 1600 meter race walk with a time of 8:58.18. Leighton was the winner in the pole vault, clearing the bar at nine feet. Leighton also took second in the triple jump going 33’10.5″ and was also sixth in the high jump clearing the bar at 4’8″.
The Red Storm racked up the points with other strong finishes during the meet. Annie Mills put in a strong performance in the 300 meter hurdles, finishing second with a time of 15.93. Mills was also seventh in the 200 meter dash.
Jenny Snyder had a successful day for the Red Storm, finishing fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.68 and sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.51. Erica Jesseman also placed well in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, finishing third in the 1600 with a time of 5:29.39 and she was runner-up in the 3200 with a time of 12:09.35.
Allison Chamberlain took second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.64. Her teammate, Jenna Van Dam was fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:04.17. In the 800, Hilary Curtis finished fourth with a time of 2:25.90.
Christy Manning had a strong day for the Storm in the throwing events. She was the runner up in the javelin with a top throw of 97’4.5″, third in the discus with a throw of 108’6″. In the shot put, her top distance was 31’2.5″, which was good for eighth place.
The Red Storm boys’ team won three events and finished with 55 points, fifth place overall for the meet. Taylor Burns, Brecht Moulin and Ben Talbot each won events for the Red Storm.
Burns was the winner of the 1600 meter race walk with a time of 7:44.7. Moulin took the top spot in the 800 meter run with a time 2:01.39. Talbot won the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:12.7. In addition to winning the 3200 meter run, Talbot was also placed third in the 1600.
Other top finishers on the boys’ side were the 4×800 relay team finished third and the 4×400 team took third as well. Sam Chick and Ben Abrahams had strong performances for the Red Storm. Chick was sixth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 43:54. He also took fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 41’3.5″. Abrahams was fourth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 11 feet.
Red Riots post good showing at SMAA’s
The South Portland Red Riot track teams had a solid day at the SMAA championships. The girls’ team finished ninth with 18 points and the boys were 12th with 14 points.
The girls’ 4×800 meter relay team finished third with a time of 10:22.78. Olivia Hendry was fourth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:32.91. Lindsay Soule was fourth in the 300 meter hurdles for the Riots with a time of 49.43. Julie Swett was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 90 feet.
The boys also had some good performances. Nick Huston was fifth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.01. Will Cabana took sixth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.79. Cabana was also sixth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.83. John Johnston was fifth in the race walk with a time of 8:59.99. The 4×100 meter relay team for South Portland was fourth with a time of 46.64. Ian Golder was fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 53.93.
“We have a very young team,” said South Portland’s boys coach Paul Brogan. “We did well in the dual meet season. We were 11-4, but when we get in the big meets we don’t have a lot of older athletes right now. It will be difficult but we’re hoping to perform the best that we can in the state meet.”
That state meet will be Saturday at Morse High School beginning at 10 a.m.
