South Portland went 2-1 over the final week of the regular season and the Riots likely assured themselves of another trip to the Western Maine Class A baseball tournament. The Riots earned a big 4-0 win over Biddeford on May 21 and they added a 5-2 win over Scarborough on Thursday, May 24, to push their record to 8-7 on the year.
The Riots were ranked No. 10 in the West A Heal Points race a week ago and last week’s victories would only help solidify a tourney berth. (The top 11 teams qualify for post-season play.)
Against Scarborough, the Riots rallied for four runs in the home half of the sixth to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 win. South Portland took advantage of four Scarborough errors during the game. Riots pitcher Chris Gorham came on in relief and picked up his third win of the year.
Scarborough (5-10) was hanging onto a tourney spot entering last week’s play. The Red Storm scored an important 2-1 win over Cheverus on Tuesday, May 22, the same day they found themselves at No. 11 in the West A standings. The Stags were ranked No. 4 last week.
That victory proved to be even more important after the Storm dropped their final two regular season games – a 10-4 loss at Bonny Eagle on Wednesday, May 23, and last Thursday’s 5-2 setback to South Portland.
The final baseball Heal Points are scheduled to be released Thursday, May 31. The teams who end the year ranked No. 6 through No. 11 will play in regional prelims on Tuesday, June 5 with quarterfinal play set for Thursday, June 7.
If Scarborough stays at No. 11, the Storm would travel to face the No. 6 seed – most recently, that was Marshwood.
Cape gets big win at Wells
The Cape Elizabeth baseball team improved to 6-9 on the season with two wins last week, including a 6-4 win at No. 5 Wells on Friday, May 25. A four-run fourth inning by the Capers proved to be the difference as they topped the Warriors despite being outhit (10-7). The big clout for Cape was a three-run homer by Andrew Guay.
Cape concluded its regular season at York on Tuesday and they’ll await the final West B Heal Point standings, which are set to be released Thursday, May 31. Finishing in the top 11 in the West B region qualifies a team for the tournament that begins Tuesday with prelim games involving teams ranked 6-11.
