Meet the candidates

The West Buxton Public Library is sponsoring a Meet the Candidates night at 7 on May 31, at Buxton town hall.

Six candidates are vying for two available selectmen seats in the only contested race. They are incumbents Dan Collomy and Carol Sanborn and challengers Peter Burns, Wanda Emery, Linda Pulsoni and Mark Smith Sr.

The secret-ballot election will be on Tuesday. June 12. Voters will also elect candidates for the planning board, an School Administrative District 6 director and budget committee.

Hamilton earns honor

Rachel Hamilton of Buxton has been named to the dean’s list at Anna Maria College, in Paxton, Mass. To qualify for the honor, a student must carry a full course load and earn a semester grade point average of 3.5. Anna Maria is a private, co-educational Catholic college.

Buxton officers academy grads

Buxton police officers Troy Chenard and Brad Gaumont graduated Friday from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in ceremonies at Thomas College in Waterville.

Chenard and Gaumont were among 60 graduates including seven state troopers. Topics at the academy in the 18-week course included domestic violence, firearms, first aid and crime scene processing.

Family Reading Night

First- and second-graders enrolled in School Administrative District 6’s reading support program at were recognized at “Family Reading Night” for their hard work this year.

On May 14 and May 16, 275 families, reading teachers, and administrators joined together at Bonny Eagle Middle School for an evening designed to encourage ongoing literacy development.

Assistant Superintendent Carol Weeks welcomed families and spoke about the importance of reading. She then introduced Cathy Walz and Alycia Campbell, who represented the new “Read to Succeed Family” program that is in the process of being implemented for the next school year.
