The region’s Class A high school track and field teams will get together on Saturday at Scarborough High School for the annual Southwestern Maine Activities Association championship meet. Last year, the Scarborough girls and the Bonny Eagle boys won their respective league titles and both teams should be in the hunt this year.
And the region’s Class B and C track teams will compete in the Western Maine Conference championships at Yarmouth High on Saturday. The York boys and girls are the defending league champions.
Bonny Eagle’s boys team is back to defend their title from a year ago. The Scots have had to rebuild this season after losing a great senior class.
Boys track coach Greg Wilkinson still expects good things from the following athletes. According to Wilkinson sophomore Nate Doehler has been a standout, running both hurdles events and doing long jump and triple jump. He’s also thrown the discus and javelin, and he’s been involved with the relays.
Juniors, Murphy Doughty and Noah Schoneberg have run middle and long distances, and fellow junior Mike Harmon has competed well in the high jump. Senior Alan Cox and junior Matt Bolton should do well in the racewalk.
“We are hoping to have a few more individuals qualify at the Southwesterns for the state meet,” Said Wilkinson. “This year, the Southwesterns should be very competitive, with Gorham the favorite, along with excellent teams from Thornton Academy, Cheverus, Biddeford, Deering and Scarborough vying for the top. It should prove to be one of the most exciting meets in a long, long time.”
Bonny Eagle’s girls team is expecting some solid performances from Melissa Carier (100 and 200), Katherine Pagano and Lauren Dudley (800, 1600, and 3200), Ashley Cox (racewalk), Katlyn Gardiner (hurdles), Amber Cronin (high jump), and the 4 x 100 relay team should also do well.
The Windham girls have several individuals who could finish among the leaders including Reilly Sullivan (400 and hurdles), and Vanessa Rallis (hurdles).
Lake Region will have several athletes competing for conference crowns including Krysti Leach (100), Jake Moore (100), Renee Nicholas (high jump, long jump and triple jump), Phil Ellis (javelin, long jump and triple jump), Taylor Kemp (shot put), and Luke Elliot (pole vault).
