The Scarborough and South Portland High baseball teams are winning games they need to win as they approach the end of the regular season. Both squads have to gain valuable Heal Points in the closing week of the campaign in order to improve their positions in the West A Heals race.
Last week, South Portland was at 4-6 and sitting in the No 13 position in the region. (Only the top 11 teams qualify for the post-season.) Since then, the Riots have won three straight games including Monday’s 4-0 shutout against Biddeford. Those victories have vaulted the Red Riots into the No. 10 spot in the most recent Heal Point standings.
Last week’s Heal Point standings had Scarborough at No. 14 with a 2-8 mark. The Storm has since won two straight games going into a big match-up with Cheverus on Tuesday, May 23. That pair of wins has placed the Storm at No. 11 in this week’s Heal standings – the last and final spot to qualify for the regional tourney. They close out the year with a game at Bonny Eagle on Wednesday, May 23, and another road game at South Portland on Thursday, May 24.
The teams just ahead of the Storm and the Riots struggled last week. No. 10 Noble went 1-2 (albeit a nice win over Portland), No. 11 Sanford went 0-3, and No. 12 Massabesic went 1-2. Those teams have all fallen below both South Portland and Scarborough and they must now face must-win situations to give themselves a chance at the post-season.
Cape Elizabeth was at No. 9 in last week’s West B Heal Point standings. The Capers lost three tough decisions since then – a 3-1 extra inning loss to Gray-New Gloucester, a 5-2 setback at Lake Region, and a 4-0 loss to Greely. They now find themselves at No. 11 in the Heal Point standings that were released Tuesday morning.
Cape will need a win o r two in the final week of the season to assure themselves of a spot in the West B tourney field. The Capers were finishing up this week with games at Freeport on Tuesday, May 22, followed by a home game against Falmouth on Wednesday, May 23, and the road games at Wells on Friday and at York on Tuesday.
