The Cape Elizabeth boys and girls tennis teams will be well represented at next week’s Round of 40 singles tournament at Bates College. Four singles players from Cape will compete on Friday, May 25, for a chance to move on to the Round of 16 one day later as the Maine Principals’ Association looks to crown this year’s top schoolboy and schoolgirl player.
Cape’s Will Hall, Woodlin Tabery and Chris Steinroeder all reached last Saturday’s qualifying round. Hall moved on with a win as did Steinroeder. Tabery was knocked out of the tourney by Devin VanDyke of Waynflete.
On the girls side, it was Cape sisters Amanda and Melissa Slack moving into the Round of 40 with qualifying round wins last Saturday. Amanda was seeded third and she topped EmJay Williams of Westbrook, 6-0, 6-0. Melissa was seeded seventh and she knocked off Karli Kesson of Bonny Eagle by the same 6-0, 6-0 score.
Two other local boys tennis players have also qualified for the Round of 40. Nicholas Tolman of Scarborough and Nicholas Lagios of South Portland have moved on as they seek a state singles crown.
Tolman successfully worked his way through the prelim round and the first round just to get into position to qualify. He defeated the No. 5 seed in that first round and he completed his day with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Jason Barriault of Deering.
Lagios downed Scarborough’s Tim Pryzbylowicz in the first round and then topped Alex Champoux of North Yarmouth Academy by a 6-3, 6-1 score.
Katharine McDonald of Scarborough and Dorothea Crowley of South Portland also reached the girls qualifying round. McDonald was knocked out by Maggie Taylor of Yarmouth and Crowley was stopped by Kate Bowring of Gorham.
