The 2007 graduating class of Southern Maine Community College will celebrate its 60th commencement ceremony on Saturday at noon at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland.

Tickets are not required. The commencement speaker will be Maine humorist Gary Crocker.

Some 650 students will graduate, with more than 400 attending the ceremony. Student awards will be handed out, including the SMCC Student of the Year Award and President’s Award to Ben Shane of Portland; the Distinguished Service Award to Jessica Helen Bady of Kennebunkport; and the All-USA Academic Team Award to Michael Schell Jr. of Saco and Heather Huntley of South Portland.

Crocker is a Maine educator, humorist and nationally known speaker on the subject of the power of humor. Crocker, of West Gardiner, has taught both English and speech, and has been the director of State and Federal Programs for the Maine Community College System since 1988. In this capacity, he manages all state and federal programs for the Maine Community College System and serves as chief legislative liaison for the system.

College President James Ortiz will lead the ceremonies.
