Foxfire comes alive

The multi-age class at Saccarappa School recently hosted Foxfire Night, displaying their projects about communities and habitats. Here’s the story of the event written by the students:

It was a hot muggy night at Saccarappa School in the gym.

All the parents started to pour in and look at all the different habitats around the world. The gymnasium was crowded. It was so packed that some people had to stand.

There were about 130 people in the gym. We had to wait in the music room. Finally, we walked in very slowly. It was scary because there were a lot of people staring at us.

Then, we started our exciting night at 6 p.m. When we started it, it was kind of scary because we had to sing and do our reports in front of a lot of people. We were sitting in front of an audience.

We sang three different songs. They were called “Fifty Nifty,” “God Bless the USA,” and “Habitats.”

We shared our five facts and our projects including our animals. Mrs. (Pamela) Michaud and (Valerie) Dominski’s classes made these to show you what we learned.

It was a successful night. We, the multiage village, want to thank you for coming and thank you for listening.

Principals in opera debut

Two Westbrook elementary school principals recently made their first opera appearances, playing a silent role in “Barber of Seville,” presented at Westbrook High School.

Congin principal Peter Lancia and Canal principal Jeremy Ray each played the role of Dr. Bartolo in separate performances by the Boston Lyric Opera Company. Music teacher Joanna Baker said children at the two schools sold pizza cards in a drive with the slogan “Help us raise the dough” to bring the opera to Westbrook.

Lancia and Ray agreed that the principal of the school that raised the most money would play a role in the performance. Baker said the agreement was on conditions they didn’t have to sing or wear tights.

The contest between the two schools tied. Dressed in 18th- century costumes, Lancia played in the morning performance and Ray in the afternoon.

Over 1,100 people attended, including 600 Canal and Congin school students as well as others from Windham, Cape Elizabeth and the Island Institute, which paid for their students to experience the thrill of a live opera performance.

This is the third year the Boston Lyric Opera Company has come to Westbrook,

“I am most grateful to Phil Rich, the director of music who gave his whole hearted support and who coordinated the event,” said music teacher Joanna Baker.
