Asphalt plant hearing Monday

A stone quarry and a multi-million asphalt plant proposed for Mosher Road will be reviewed in a special meeting by Gorham Planning Board at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Gorham Municipal Center, 75 South St.

Shaw Brothers Construction Inc., of Gorham is seeking a permit for the project on 125 acres. The site, which the construction company bought from Lachance Brick, is zoned industrial. The proposal is the only item on the planning board agenda.

The discussion could be continued to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Library writing winners

This year’s student writing contest sponsored by the Baxter Memorial Library Association garnered 212 submissions from students in Grades 3 through 12.

The prizes were awarded at the association’s annual meeting on May 2 in the library.

The winners in elementary poetry are Esther Eaton, Grade 3; Gabby Burke, Grade 4; and Megan Dunlap, Grade 5.

In bookmarks, Sarah Kennedy, Grade 8, won first prize; Megan Mitchell, gGade 8, second; and Amanda Richardson, Grade 7, third.

Middle school poetry winners were Megan Mitchell, Grade 8, first prize; Cassie Martel, Grade 6, second; and Nicole Gile, Grade 7, third.

In the middle school essay category, Lily Landry, Grade 6, was the winner; Victoria Parker, Grade 7, second; and Kevin Lubelczyk, Grade 7, third.

Jessie Hawkes, Grade 12, took first place in high school poetry; Emma Deans, Grade 12, second; Jessica Rich, Grade 10, third.

Deans also won the high school flash fiction category with Jessica Rich, Grade 10, second.

Free swing mini class

The Centre of Movement, 19 State St., is offering a free “West Coast Swing” mini class at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 18.

Dancing 7:30-9:30 p.m. will follow the class. For more information, call 839-DANS (3267).

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on May 10 that the U.S. public debt was $8,817,010,977,746.30.
