The Buxton police have confirmed that the body found Friday evening in the Saco River in Buxton is that of Coreen Wiese, 15, of Buxton, who had been missing since Nov. 8.
Officer Mike Grovo of the Buxton Police Department said the preliminary cause of death has been ruled a drowning by the state medical examiner’s office. The final cause of death will be determined after toxicology tests are completed.
The medical examiner’s office used dental records and DNA to determine the body was Weise’s.
Buxton Police Chief Jody Thomas said police were “fairly confident” that no foul play was involved in Wiese’s death. The medical examiner’s office said the autopsy revealed no significant injuries and the findings were all consistent with drowning.
“I’m glad there’s closure for the family, but I’m sad the result is what it is,” said Grovo.
Grovo said he had spoken to Wiese’s parents. “They are doing the best they can be doing, considering they’ve lost their daughter,” he said.
Wiese’s parents, Wesley and Cynthia Wiese, who were not at the press conference at the Buxton police department, issued a statement discussing the discovery of their daughter’s body. “We now know that the body found in the Saco River is our beloved daughter Coreen,” said the statement. “We are deeply saddened with her loss, she is loved and missed by all. We wish to thank the community of Buxton, all of Coreen’s family and friends, the media, and law enforcement personnel that have been so helpful with the search for Coreen during the past six months. Because of all your help and God’s will we are able to bring Coreen home.”
