Despite some rainy weather this spring, Westbrook Little League still got off to a terrific start recently completing the first week of the 2007 season.
Sappi remains the only undefeated team in the league winning three games last week. They started their season by defeating Tickets Unlimited, 9-5. Keenan Lowe provided all the offense that Sappi would need going 4-for-4 including a home run and a triple. Lowe also started the game for Sappi with Alec Hazlewood coming on to close the door on Tickets. Mike Pena hit a homerun for the Tickets team.
Sappi also defeated the Lions, 16-7, behind the pitching of Josh Ames and Kaleb Kent. Offensively, Cameron McLain homered and doubled while Keenan Lowe chipped in with three doubles. Sappi completed their dominating week by defeating the Dairy Queen 15-4. Sappi pitchers Andrew Lamson, Marty McInnis and Cam McLain kept Dairy Queen at bay as Tyler Work led the way offensively with three hits.
Tickets Unlimited is currently in second place with a record of 3-1. After losing to Sappi, Tickets broke out the bats and defeated Dairy Queen, 19-11. Andrew McCarthy went 5-for-5 for Tickets while Derek Bouchard added his first Little League homerun, which conveniently came on his 11th birthday. James Doyle was 3-for-4 for Dairy Queen.
Their third game of the week featured a re-match of opening day with the Lions. This turned out to be a very tight game with Tickets holding on for a 5-4 victory. The Lions made several fine defensive plays in the field at key points of the game. Tickets loaded the bases in five out of the six innings, but great plays by brothers Ryan and Jack Gilligan frustrated the Tickets hitters and limited their scoring. In this game, Dillan Boutin recorded his first Little League hit while Marty Pena went 3-for-4 for the winning team.
The Eagles, Kiwanis and Messer teams are all tied for third with 2-1 records.
The Eagles sent 15 men to the plate in the first inning and went on to a 12-8 win over Phoenix Welding. Blake Fillmore led the way for the Eagles with three hits of the team’s 15 hits. The Eagles also surprised Messer, 6-4, in an exciting contest. The pitching was the story as Chandler Todd and Brenden Richardson struck out eight batters apiece. Offensively, Richardson led the way with a double and a triple to pace the Eagles.
