Studied world trade
The Grade 6 class of Colette Gagnon at Wescott Junior High School recently earned certificates, learning about world economies taught by one of Gagnon’s former students.
Jonathan Meserve of Seafax, a Cumberland-based company, taught the “Our World” Junior Achievement course. The students learned about world resources, economic systems, monetary exchange and trade.
Foxfire Night At Saccarappa
Foxfire Night will be held Friday at 6 at Saccarappa School.
The multi-age students are presenting the program. “The classes are doing this to show grown ups that they can do challenging things and to prove what they have learned about communities and habitats,” the students wrote.
The students also send a photo of one of their projects.

Chopin Club opera program
The Chopin Club held its April meeting at the home of Elba Parr with 11 members present.
Louise Leighton, program chairperson pro tem, presented a program about opera. Performers were Kathy Mariano, flute; and voices Louise Leighton and Juni Dugas.
Others attending were Marge Cutter, Martha Day, Florence LeBlanc, Mary Levesque, Marian Rich, Ruth Stokes and Jan Usher.
“An interesting tidbit we learned was that there are words (two verses) to the ever popular ‘Bridal Chorus’ from the opera ‘Lohengrin,’ by Richard Wagner,” Levesque said.
Stokes, a certified piano teacher, reported that nine of her students participated in an evaluation program on March 10 at the Junior Festivals, sponsored by the local, state and national Federation of Music Clubs.
The evaluations were held in Corthell Hall at the University of Southern Maine. The students belong to the Junior Music Club called the Windham Music Makers. Eight students received a superior rating. They are Kaleb Eddy, Jasmine Eddy, Bronte Sone, Luda Barankevich, Michail Barankevich, Austin Loukas, Ella Demetriou and Abishag Suresh.
One student, Caroline Suresh, received an excellent rating. Ella Demetriou and Austin Loukas have earned their second Gold Cups. First Gold Cup receivers are Luda and Michail Barankevich, Jasmine Eddy, Bronte Sone and Abishag Suresh.
Bean supper benefit
Trinity Lutheran church of Westbrook will sponsor a bean supper on Saturday, May 12, from 4:30-6 p.m., at the North Scarborough Grange, Route 22 (Outer Congress Street).
The proceeds will be split among three local community programs, the Preble Street Resource Center, the Center for Grieving Children and the Longcreek Youth Development Chaplaincy Fund.
Trinity will provide the workers, homemade pies and help prepare the food. The menu includes baked beans, red hot dogs, chop suey, cole slaw and homemade brown bread and pies. Tickets, available at the door, are $7, $3.
David to entertain seniors
Musician Merle David will perform when Westbrook Senior Citizens meet at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Westbrook-Warren Congregational Church, 810 Main St.
Those whose last names begin with P through Z are asked to provide refreshments.

Vets announce Memorial Day schedule
The Westbrook Veterans’ Memorial Day Association said the parade will form at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 28, on Longfellow Street and will step off at 10 a.m.
Units that wish to participate should contact Robert Barton at 854-2961 or Russ Glidden at 252-6653 by Monday, May 21. Organizers said that the parade committee will not accept individuals or units that involve political or advertising affliations.
American flags will be placed on veterans’ graves in the city’s cemeteries beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. A rain date has been set for 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May15, at 9 a.m. Volunteers are welcome to help.
For a new veteran gravesite, a family can go to Woodlawn Cemetery on May 12 to receive a standard and flag or they can be picked up at the city barn.
Indoor yard sale
Mill Brook Estates, 300 East Bridge St., is sponsoring an indoor yard sale 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. The sale promises something for everyone and hot dogs, soda and coffee will be available.
Cleanup reminder
The Westbrook community is celebrating “Join Hands Day” with a city clean up 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.
Volunteers are asked to meet at 8:45 a.m. at Riverbank Park on Main Street. Rain date will be 12:45 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 6.
Music Sunday begins
The Universalist Church of Westbrook, 719 Main St., will host its first Music Sunday service, this Sunday from 10:30 a.m.-noon, organized and led by “The Guru” Brian James. The event features musical performances by local artists Nigel Hall, Tony McNaboe, Dominic Lavoie, Jon Roods, Kari Presnell and Sara Therrien.
Eagles auxiliary hosting convention
Westbrook Auxiliary 2977 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles is hosting the state’s three-day auxiliary convention beginning Friday.
