A fire damaged a two-family home on Whipple Road in Gorham Monday afternoon.
At approximately 1:30 p.m., firefighters were called to the scene of the blaze at 34 Whipple Road.
Gorham Fire Chief Robert Lefebvre said Tuesday that the fire was started by food left unattended on a stove. Lefebvre said a resident was cooking and left the house to go and rake some leaves.
Lefebvre said that by the time firefighters arrived, the fire was well established.
“It was very heavily involved when they got here,” he said.
Lefebvre said that the fire was mainly contained to one side of the single-story home and there was extensive damage to the interior of the home. One man was home at the time of the fire, Lefebvre said, but he managed to escape without injury. Lefebvre did not release the man’s name.
Firefighters from Windham and Standish assisted the Gorham Fire Department at the scene.
