The Gorham Business & Civic Exchange is presenting its “2007 Business Person of the Year” award on Thursday, May 3, at an after-hours social hosted by Steve Crockett of Crockett Interiors, 673 Main St., from 5:30- 7 p.m.

Last year’s award recipient, Virginia Wilder Cross, will be handing over the plaque’to the new winner. Selection criteria is based on being involved and promoting business in the Gorham community, serving as a leader or mentor, and being creative and imaginative in business.

Door prizes, a fresh flower arrangement or landscaping gift certificate, courtesy Little River Flower Farm, will be raffled. There is no charge for the event.

Baxter book sale

The semi-annual Baxter Memorial Library book sale will be held in a new location – the activities room in the new Gorham Municipal Center, 75 South St., next door to the library.

The fun starts Thursday, May 3, from 5-7 p.m. with the library friends group members-only preview night. Those who are not members can join at the door. For the general public, the sale runs Friday, May 4, from 9 a.m. -7 p.m. and Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Big barn sale

A gigantic barn sale for men and boys/home and garden will be held from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. on Saturday at the West Gorham Union Church.The church is three miles west of Gorham Village on Route 25.

Barstow picked for commission

Speaker of the House of Representatives Glenn Cummings has appointed Rep. Chris Barstow, D-Gorham, to serve as a member of the Council of State Governments’ Intergovernmental Affairs Committee for the 123rd Legislature.

The Council of State Governments supports state governments and Legislatures throughout the country by providing timely policy information and connecting policy makers and staff with experts in different states. The Intergovernmental Affairs Committee helps to guide and direct policy for federal-state relations and monitors federal issues.

Barstow is erving his third term in the House. He is chairman of the Legislature’s State and Local Government Committee, which is responsible for overseeing important aspects of government structure and relations.

Historians to meet

Gorham Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 7, in the Gorham Savings Bank Operational Center off Gray Road.

Garden club offers scholarship

Applications are now being accepted for the Gorham Garden Club Merit Scholarship.

To be eligible, applicants must have been a resident of Gorham for the past two years. They also must either be a high school senior or be currently enrolled in a post-secondary school, planning to major in plant and soil science, environmental studies, botany, ecology, forestry, wildlife management or related fields.

Those applying must submit an essay describing themselves, their backgrounds, and why they are interested in their chosen fields. The essays will be judged on content, form and clarity of expression.

The scholarship will be for at least $300. It will be paid to the school in which the winner is enrolled after good standing and enrollment is verified.

The essays should be double-spaced and not exceed two pages and include the applicant’s full name and phone number along with mail and e-mail addresses. They should be sent by June 1 to Scholorship Chairman, Gorham Garden Club, 20 Carll Lane, Gorham, Maine, 04038-2309.
