The Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (MIAAA), in conjunction with the
Maine Sports Hall of Fame, presented the annual MIAAA/Maine Sports Hall of Fame Retired Athletic Adminstrator Award to John Giberson at its April 5 luncheon awards program. Mr. Giberson, who served as Bonny Eagle athletic administrator from 1984-1996, was unanimously selected by the
MIAAA Board of Directors to receive this recognition.
The award is presented to an individual who has left the profession of athletic administration but continues to contribute to youth athletics.
Since 1996, John has served interscholastic athletics in the southern Maine area in a variety of ways. He is a member of the Western Maine Soccer
Officials Board, the Western Maine Board of Approved Basketball Officials, and the Western Maine Softball Umpires Board. Locally, he works as a timer at Bonny Eagle High School varsity boys soccer games and is a member of the Bonny Eagle Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
During his 12-year tenure as Bonny Eagle’s athletic director, John was instrumental in adding several new programs, including boys indoor track, girls indoor track, and football. Bonny Eagle athletic teams won 12 state championships during his time of service and 56 student-athletes garnered individual state titles.
John is a former president of the Southwestern Maine Activities Association (1992-1993) and
was chairman of both the Maine Principals’ Association Field Hockey and Wrestling Committees. He served on the MIAAA Board of Directors from 1990-1996 and was instrumental in planning and implementing that organization’s annual spring conference.
Since his graduation from the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham (now USM) in 1972, John has been employed by MSAD #6 as a mathematics teacher, summer school coordinator, and athletic coach in addition to his time as athletic administrator. He retired from teaching in June of 2006 and now serves as Bonny Eagle High School’s attendance coordinator. His wife Carolyn is
also an educator who works as a fifth grade teacher at George E. Jack School.
The Bonny Eagle community extends a heartfelt congratulations to John for earning this
presitigious state level award. It recognizes his service and commitment to the students of MSAD #6 and the southern Maine area during his
distinguished 35 year career in our district.
