SAD 6 school straw poll set
The board of directors of School Administrative District 6 will hold a public hearing and straw vote for a proposed Buxton elementary school at 7 p.m. on Monday in the cafeteria at Bonny Eagle Middle School.
The project architect, Jeffrey Larimer of Harriman Associates, will share floor plans and tentative elevations for the new facility. Residents will be polled concerning their support to move the project move forward to the state Board of Education in April.
All voters in the district will have the opportunity to consider the project in a May referendum if the state board gives its approval at its April meeting.
Stack receives DAR award
Crystal Stack, a senior at Bonny Eagle High School, has been named this year’s recipient of a good citizen award by Daughters of the American Revolution.
Stack is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stack of Buxton.
Each year, the Rebecca Emery Chapter of the American Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors the DAR Good Citizen Award for a member of the senior class from Bonny Eagle High School. The qualities for consideration of this award include dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.
The faculty selected individuals from a list of all seniors who they felt met the criteria. The five members of the senior class receiving the greatest number of votes were then put on a secret ballot from which the faculty selected Stack.
Grant firefighter of year
Lt. Jason Grant of Buxton Fire Department has been named Fire fighter of the Year in York County and has received a legislative proclamation for heroism.
Buxton selectmen and Fire Chief Jim Graves recognized Grant last week at the weekly selectmen’s meeting for his achievements.
“We want to represent Buxton well,” Grant said. “We hope to make you proud of us.”
Grant has received a plaque and a certificate from the York County Firefighters Association and a legislative proclamation for his actions in saving the home of an elderly man on Jan. 21 this year. The house was saved although an outbuilding four feet away was engulfed in flames.
Outdoor emergency? Call Buxton
Buxton Public Safety is ready for emergencies whether on bare ground or snow.
Mac McLaughlin, deputy chief at the Groveville Fire Station, last week showed its new snowmobile and rescue sled. The snowmobile, donated by the Groveville Fire Department Association, cost $7,200, and the sled, a gift from the Bar Mills Rescue Association, cost $4,500.
With skis for winter use, the sled can be mounted on wheels to be towed by an ATV in other seasons. The enclosed fiberglass sled is equipped with blankets, a long board that goes on a stretcher and has a head restraint. It also has a seat inside for a paramedic.
The sled replaces a 20-year-old model donated by the Sokokis Riders, a snowmobile club. Buxton has had the new snowmobile and sled since December. Both sit on a trailer and are ready for action.
Buxton is willing to share its new equipment. “If a surrounding town needs it, just call Buxton dispatch,” MacLaughlin said.
Gordon Bok to perform
Folksinger Gordon Bok, deemed by Time Magazine to be “the poet laureate of those who go down to the sea in ships,” will perform at Saco River Grange Hall on Friday, April 13 at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets for Bok’s appearance are $14 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. Harpist and singer Carol Rohl will make a special appearance.
Bok grew up in Camden where he started singing and playing guitar at an early age. He worked on or near the water much of his earlier years, in shipyards and on sailing vessels, serving in every capacity from dishwasher to captain. As the original first-mate on the sloop, “Clearwater,” he toured the New England coast with the Hudson River Sloop Singers.
He has recorded more than 30 albums, solo and with other musicians and performs at folk clubs, concert halls and festivals throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Scandinavia.
‘Flaming Guns’ to premiere
Hold onto your Stetsons for the Originals’ production of Jane Martin’s outrageous shoot ’em up, knock ’em down, cut ’em up comedic romp “Flaming Guns of the Purple Sage” at Saco River Grange Hall in Bar Mills.
Flaming Guns mixes slapstick, satire and black humor as it pits the Code of the West against contemporary societal madness. The play, which contains adult situations, is directed by Dana Packard.
Shows are April 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for students and seniors. Thursday, April 26 is pay-what-you-can. Call 929-5412 for reservations.
