The derby’s shanty contest went well according to judge Julie-Lynn Belon. The judges looked at eight displays before deciding to award the first place trophy to title-defender Phil Michaud.

Michaud, who owns Panther Run Marina in Raymond, also won the last shanty contest, held in 2005. Since then he said he and his team have beefed up the shack and made it more portable.

“It took a lot of planning and a lot of work,” Michaud said. “There are approximately six of us who have been doing this for six years.”

The other men on his crew are Jeff Webber, Gary Cornell, Craig Elliott, Peter Woodbury, and Chris Webber.

Michaud said that in the end the team probably spent about $1,500 on the shack. The 16-foot-square shack included running water pulled through a hole in the ice with a battery-run bilge pump, an 8-foot-square cook shack and a wood stove. It was built with panels for easy transportation.

Michaud and crew won a trophy and bragging rights for their hard work.
