Things looked pretty bleak for the Scarborough hockey team. They had played well and they had dominated a good portion of Tuesday night’s West A quarterfinal game with Portland, but they trailed 1-0 with three minutes left in regulation.
Finally, after being stymied most of the evening by some superb goaltending from the Bulldogs’ Zach Meoli, the Red Storm tied the game thanks to a Jason Quirk goal at 12:12 of the final period. Ben Talbot assisted on the play that tied the score at 1-1 sending the two teams to overtime.
In the extra session, senior defenseman Steve Cook ended it with an unassisted goal that sends the Red Storm into a West A semifinal match-up with top-seeded Falmouth. The 2-1 win by the fifth-seeded Storm over the fourth-seeded Bulldogs also means that Scarborough and Falmouth will meet for the third time this season.
Scarborough goalie Josh Larrabee allowed just one Portland goal and he came up big on several occasions finishing with 18 saves.
The Yachtsmen claimed a 5-2 victory over the Red Storm back on Jan. 11 and they recently earned a 3-1 win over Scarborough on Feb. 17. Falmouth (20-2) reached the regional semifinals with a 7-1 win over St. Dom’s on Tuesday evening.
Scarborough is now 15-6 on the season heading into Saturday afternoon’s game at the Colisee in Lewiston. The Falmouth-Scarborough clash is set for 2 p.m. and the other semifinal pits No. 2 Biddeford (18-3) against No. 3 Kennebunk (16-4-1) at noon.
The semifinals were re-scheduled from Friday night to Saturday afternoon because of the expected snowstorm for Friday.
