The Scarborough boys’ basketball team was eliminated from the Western Maine Class A tournament with a 36-30 loss at Gorham in last Thursday’s preliminary round.
The Red Storm entered the fourth quarter down by four. Reid Griffith and James Hiltner each hit a jumper to open the quarter to tie the game, but Scarborough was unable to overtake the Rams. Gorham cemented the win with successful trips to the free throw line in the late going.
“They really like to spread you out,” said Scarborough coach Matt Townsend. “We didn’t do a very good job of adjusting. A program like Gorham, they are going to make free throws.”
The game opened with a 6-1 Gorham run. As time expired in the first, Dean tossed up a buzzer beater attempt from near half court. The shot was off the mark but he was fouled on the shot. He made all three free throws to give the Rams an 11-6 lead.
The Red Storm began the second quarter with an 11-2 run. Jordan Hicks opened the quarter with two points followed by Hiltner hitting a jumper. Mike Foustoukos hit a shot for Gorham to slow Scarborough’s progress a bit but Griffith, Chris Hughes and Ian Philbrick kept the Storm rolling.
Scarborough took the lead with a jumper to open the second half before Gorham took the lead for good on their next possession. At the end of the third, it was 26-22 in favor of the Rams.
Low scoring games have been the norm for both teams this season. This time Scarborough came out on the short end of the stick.
“It was an ugly win,” said Gorham coach Kevin Jenkins. “But we’ve won ugly before.”
The Rams’ reward for their hard work was a showdown with second-seeded Cheverus on Saturday. The Stags won that game, 52-36.
The Red Storm finished up their season 8-11. They were led by Jason Philbrick’s 10 points.
