The Westbrook hockey team finished at No. 10 in the final West A Heal Point standings with a 10-9 record. The Blazes will travel to No. 7 Bonny Eagle (14-5) on Friday or Saturday this weekend for a regional prelim. The winner of that game moves on to face No. 2 Biddeford (17-3) – most likely on Tuesday at the Biddeford Ice Arena.
The Blue Blazes most recent game was an 8-3 loss to Cony.
Cony opened the game with two straight goals before Westbrook broke in with a score by Matthew Buotte at 13:01 in the period.
In the second period, with Cony leading 4-1, the Blazes’ Zach Souza cut the deficit in half with a goal at 5:10. Cony added another before the period ended for a 5-2 lead.
Buotte scored the first goal of the third to get the Blazes within two, but Cony answered with three straight to end the game.
Gorham will play prelim
The Gorham hockey team has struggled this season with injuries and a top tier schedule. But even with a 4-16 record, the Rams managed to get into the post-season as the No. 11 team in the final West A Heal Point standings.
Gorham will play at No. 6 Deering this weekend in a regional prelim. The winner will play at No. 3 Kennebunk – most likely on Tuesday at the Biddeford Ice Arena.
The Rams dropped their final game of the season, 7-2, to Portland.
The Bulldogs scored one goal in the first and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead before the Rams finally got on the board in the third.
With the score 4-0, David Gushee broke the shutout with an unassisted goal and it was Gushee scoring again at 13:05 while his team was on the power play.
Goalie James Gregoire had 28 saves for Gorham in the loss.
Bonny Eagle No. 7 in region
The high-scoring Bonny Eagle hockey team will host a regional prelim this weekend after finishing at No. 7 in the final West A Heal Point standings. The Scots (14-5) will host No. 10 Westbrook with the winner taking on No. 2 Biddeford.
Bonny Eagle finished up their regular season schedule last Saturday with a win 5-1 over Noble. Nate Jewell had a hat trick for the 14-5 Scots.
Jewell scored the first goal of the game just 1:13 into the first period. At 5:40, the Scots added an another tally from Taylor Bishop. (Bishop had assisted on Jewell’s goal.)
C.J. Blanchard added to the Bonny Eagle lead at 14:01 of the first. Noble got their only goal of the game when Todd Carpenter buried a power play goal at 14:25. Goalie Cody Bradway had four saves for the Scots in that opening period.
In the third period, Jewell scored at 7:20 while the Scots were short-handed. His third score came at 12:28 and was the final goal of the game. Bradway finished with 14 saves.
