Stanwood tribute at Lincoln dinner
G. Philip Stanwood, formerly of Gorham, was honored on Feb. 3 at the Italian Heritage Center by the Lincoln Club of Portland at its 122nd celebration of the birthday of Abraham Lincoln.
Stanwood, now living in Biddeford, was presented with a plaque recognizing his 20 years of dedication and service to the organization.
Gorham resident Abbott Mosher said Stanwood grew up in the house across Main Street from the intersection of Gray Road and Stanwood was a classmate of Mosher’s brother, Erlon Mosher.
“Phil is an avid sports enthusiast of Gorham and has been given a lifetime pass to the athletic events. Phil’s mom was a Cressey of Cressey & Allen,” Mosher said. “She taught piano to Erlon and me.”
James Nicholas of South Portland, treasurer of the group for 16 years, was also recognized. The club honored the memory of former President Gerald M. Ford, who led the country during the post Nixon years.
The local club is the oldest Lincoln club in the country, according to Cora Brown of Portland, who has been very active in the organization for more than 60 years. Brown served in each of the elected offices at least once and ticket sales for the entire time.
The guest speaker was U.S. Sen. Susan M. Collins, who shared her thoughts on issues facing the Senate today. Collins has been chairman of the Homeland Security Committee for the past four years. She has not missed a roll call during her 10 years in Washington.
Club president Artemus Picard of Scarborough hosted this year’s event and Marilyn Glavin, minister of the Second Congregational Church in Biddeford, offered the Invocation and Benediction. Carolyn Gilman of Gorham is the president-elect.
