The South Portland High girls basketball team and the Scarborough girls basketball team both qualified for this week’s Western Maine Class A tournament.
The Riots finished as the No. 4 team in the region and they’re set to face No. 5 Deering in a quarterfinal match-up on Friday at the Portland Expo.
After starting the season 2-2, the Riots won 13 of their final 14 games to head into the tourney with plenty of momentum. One of their losses did come at he hands of Deering back on Dec. 21, but the Riots are also the only team to have beaten top-seeded McAuley this year.
South Portland got ready for the tourney with a come-from-behind 53-41 victory at Kennebunk last Thursday. The Rams had a 19-8 second period lead before the Riots rallied for the win.
Kelsey Flaherty finished with 18 points to pace the Riots. Christina Aceto played her usual solid all-around game at both ends of the floor. She finished with 12 points, plenty of key steals and assists and some big fourth quarter rebounds. And Erin Stilphen was another Riot in Double figures finishing the game with 10 points.
Scarborough lost three of their last four games (one loss was to top-seeded McAuley and another was to No. 2 Biddeford), but the Red Storm’s win over Kennebunk during that stretch was enough to get them into the West A tournament field. And as luck would have it, Scarborough gets to play that same Kennebunk squad at Kennebunk in a prelim contest that was scheduled for Tuesday evening. Scarborough finished the season as the No. 10 team in West A with an 8-10 record and the Rams ended the season as the No. 7 team at 9-9.
Cape Elizabeth ended their Western Maine Conference season at 3-15, just one spot out of the West B tournament field.
