Historians want clock in steeple
Sen. Phil Bartlett reported that Gorham Historical Society voted 21-11 at its meeting Monday night to recommend to the town council that the clock be returned to its original location in the steeple of First Parish Church.
“The vote (on my motion) followed an extensive presentation by Town Councilor Burleigh Loveitt as well as shorter presentations by myself and a descendant of Toppan Robie,” Bartlett said.
The town clock, which Toppan Robie gave the town in 1868, is being restored after being removed from the steeple last fall. A 3-3 deadlock vote by Gorham’s town council last week defeated a motion to place the clock in the new municipal center and left the future location of the clock undecided.
Bartlett said a letter would be sent by Historical Society President Jan Labrecque or Secretary Gladys Carter to the town council in the near future.
