The Scarborough girls’ indoor track team won its second consecutive Southwestern Maine Activities Association championship with a dominant performance Saturday at the Portland Expo.
The Red Storm finished first with 156 points. Bonny Eagle was second with 941?2 and Thornton Academy third with 911?2. Biddeford scored 27 points and South Portland 17.
“(Thornton) has had a couple of teams that have scored in the 150s and I think (Scarborough’s) team really ranks up there with those two teams,” said Thornton coach Mark Defrancesco. “The dominance of scoring 150 points in this league is pretty phenomenal…it’s a pretty special group there.”
Scarborough displayed its talent by finishing first in nine of the meet’s 20 events and the Red Storm displayed its depth by placing two athletes in four others.
“The depth of the team shows it wasn’t any one individual,” said Scarborough coach Ron Kelly.
The Red Storm have now seven SMAA championships, tying them with Thornton Academy for the most all time.
“The memories from before you don’t put away,” Kelly said. “(Each year) you have different kids that worked hard to get to this level.”
Winning events for the Red Storm were Annie Mills (Sr. 200, Sr. 45 hurdles), Lauren Blaisdell (Jr. 40), Catie Funk (Jr. shot put), Allison Chamberlain (400), Hilary Curtis (Sr. 800), Erica Jesseman (2 mile), Kaitlynn Saldanha (600) and Lily Parenteau (high jump).
Scarborough will vie for its third-straight Class A state title Monday, Feb. 19, at Bates College in Lewiston.
“For most, it’s the culmination of the season,” Kelly said. “Hopefully it will be their chance to have their best performance of the season.”
Not that it could get much better.
The Scarborough boys team finished third in its meet with 90 points while Gorham won the meet with 129.5. South Portland finished with 121?2 points.
Finishing first for Scarborough were Brecht Moulin (400) and Phil Lambert (200). The Red Storm also won the Int. 840 relay.
The Red Storm were boosted by second-place performances from Lambert (Sr. 45 hurdles) and Ben Violette (Jr. 600) and third-place finishes by Nate Hathaway (mile), Scott Delano (Int. 600), Brad Nakanishi (Jr. 600) and the junior and senior relay teams.
Scoring points for the South Portland girls team were Lindsay Soule who finished second in the open 600 and fifth in the Sr. 45 hurdles, Olivia Hendry who was third in the two mile and Kirsten Bakke with a sixth place finish in the Jr. 800.
Eugene Arsenault finished fourth in the shot put for South Portland’s boys, while teammates Ian Golder (400), Will Cabana (Sr. 300) each finished fifth in their events, and Brian Arsentault and David Knowland finished sixth in theirs. The junior and intermediate relay teams each finished sixth as well.
