The South Portland girls team also took on Cheverus Friday evening. The Red Riots had three girls score 10 points or more as they cruised to a 58-28 win.

Erin Stilphen led the attack for the Riots with 13 points.

“She’s a good kid,” said Riots coach Mike Giordano. “She’s a presence in their at 6’2″. With those hands she’s very intimidating. She’s done some nice things for us this year defensively and her offensive game continues to grow.”

After the first quarter the game was tied at 10. But South Portland dominated the remaining three quarters holding Cheverus to eight points or less in each quarter.

South Portland’s offensive strength showed in the second and third quarters when they scored 22 and 20 points. Kelsey Flaherty had 11 points and Jessica Aceto finished with 10.

The way the girls league has been this season, Giordano knows the Riots will have their work cut out for them when the tourney starts.

“It’s a great league this year,” he said. “It’s a game every night. That’s good for the fans to watch and its good to get the girls ready for the tournament.”
