Led by Anthony Atkins and his 21 points, the Bonny Eagle boys’ basketball team came within a basket of ending Cheverus’ perfect season. The Scots had taken a 34-22 halftime lead before the Stags rallied to force overtime. In the extra frame the Stags managed to hold off the Scots for the 56-54 win.

The Scots got off to a great start and built an eight-point lead in the first quarter and that advantage grew to 12 points at the break.

But as they so often do, the Stags found a way to win.

In the third quarter, Cheverus held Bonny Eagle to just five points while racking up 14 and getting themselves within three points of the Scots.

In the final quarter Bonny Eagle hung on to their lead as long as they could, but the Stags’ Doug Alston hit a free throw with just under a minute to go to force overtime.

In the overtime period, Cheverus shot well from the free throw line to gain the advantage. Anthony Atkins hit a 3-pointer to pull the Scots back within a point. But Eric Friend hit a free throw with 5.2 seconds left to give Cheverus their winning advantage.
