The Gorham Skate Park is now an offical nonprofit organization, meaning all donations to help fund the effort can be made out directly to the Gorham Community Skate Park.
Janet Williams, an attorney and member of the school board, has provided her legal services pro bono. According to Treasurer Gundrun Cushman, the skate park bank account will be set up next week and ready for depositing donations.
Also, Robbie Cushman and Curran Candridge have been chosen student leaders, and the skate park committe is looking for at least one more student leader.
“It’s important to have the kids as involved as possible,” committee member Dana Redmond said. Another way for kids to earn and raise money is by signing a Kid’s Contract agreeing to earn $100. This can be done however they want, baby sitting, shoveling snow, doing errands, odd jobs, etc.
The committee is also planning a myspace.com Web site, where the community can turn to for information about fundraising activities.
A plot of town land by the public safety building is being eyed for the park.
Ted Densmore, co-chairman, said there was an outstanding show of support for the skate park in Gorham when he was collecting signatures for a petition at the November polls. “Petitions show the community is very supportive and want our Gorham youth to have a safe place to skate, like our neighbors, Windham, Westbrook and Scarborough. Almost everyone signed our petition. We have close to 1,000 signatures,” he said.
Donation jars are out at local businesses. Retail outlets who have the jars on their counters include Tots to Teens, Kings & Queens, Carter’s Automotive, Gorham House of Pizza, Eclipse Hair & Nails, Dance Studio of Maine and Whispy Ends. Businesses that would like a donation jar should call 839-5434.
The Gorham Skate Park Committee, which formed last summer, meets the second Wednesday of every month, at 6:30 p.m. at the Baxter Library. The meeting is open to all who want to get involved and help make this a reality for Gorham youth.
