Skate park plans on roll
The Gorham Skate Park Committee has established a nonprofit status, enabling all donations to be made out directly to the Gorham Community Skate Park.
Attorney Janet Willams, a Gorham School Committee member, is a founding member of the Gorham Educational Foundation and volunteers in the after- school clubs. She has donated her legal services. “We are deeply grateful,” said Dana Redmond, a committee spokeswoman and executive director of Gorham Civic & Business Exchange. “We couldn’t have done this without her. It was so important to have this set up correctly.”
According to Treasurer Gundrun Cushman, the Skatepark bank account will be set up next week and ready for donations.
Redmond said Robbie Cushman and Curran Candridge have been named as student leaders for the project and at least one more is being sought. “It’s important to have the kids as involved as possible,” Redmond said.
The kids can raise money by signing a “kid’s contract,” agreeing to earn $100. Redmond said students could earn money by baby sitting, shoveling snow, doing errands or doing odd jobs. The committee is also planning a Myspace.com web site, where the community can find information about fundraising activities.
Ted Densmore, co-chairperson, said there was an outstanding show of support for the skate park in Gorham when he was collecting signatures for a petition at the November polls. “Petitions show the community is very supportive and want our Gorham youth to have a safe place to skate like our neighbors, Windham, Westbrook and Scarborough. “We have close to 1,000 signatures,” he said.
Donation jars are at local businesses. Retail outlets that have jars on counter tops include Tots to Teens, Kings & Queens, Carter’s Automotive, Gorham House of Pizza, Eclipse Hair & Nails, Dance Studio of Maine, and Whispy Ends.
Those would like a donation jar placed at at a business, call Rhonda at 839-5434. “Please show your support by making a monetary donation, no matter how small,” Redmond said.
The Gorham Skate Park committee meets the second Wednesday of every month, 6:30 p.m. at The Baxter Library. The meeting is open to all who want to get involved and help make this a reality for Gorham youth.
