Cape Elizabeth High School athletes were in regular season action over the weekend. The basketball teams took to the hardwood against Wells and the ice hockey team saw action against Kennebunk and Gorham.
The boys’ basketball team picked up their second win in a row when they defeated Wells 77-33. The win makes the Capers 5-3 on the season.
The Capers were able to get ahead of the Warriors with with their 22-point first quarter. And they stayed in front because of their suffocating defense over the final three quarters. Cape allowed just five points in both the second and third quarters and only seven in the fourth.
Will Hall led the way for the Capers with 15 points. The Capers were scheduled to face Lake Region next.
The girls’ basketball team had a much different result against the Warriors, losing 56-44. The Capers weren’t able to get any offense going until the fourth quarter. Wells held them to eight points or less in each of the first three quarters.
Cape broke out in the fourth and scored 23, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit. Brennan Balfour had 10 points to lead Cape, who drop to 1-7. They were also scheduled to face Lake Region next.
The Cape ice hockey team played against Kennebunk on Saturday and followed that with a game against Gorham on Monday.
The Capers fell to Kennebunk, 6-1. Colby Pearson scored the lone goal for the Capers in the third period. Phil and Lincoln Jordan combined to stop 25 shots for the Capers.
On Monday night, Cape had a better result against Gorham when they slipped by for an 8-7 victory. In a game played in the Cumberland County Civic Center the Cape skaters shined.
Ben Davis and Colby Pearson scored for Cape in the first period but they trailed 3-2 at the first intermission. Cape tied the game after two periods when they got three goals from Andrew Gibson, Tom Rich and Eric Knight.
The Capers won the third period as well when they scored the tying and go-ahead goals in a three-minute span. Gibson scored his second goal in the third. Tanner Tremblay scored the tying goal and Sean Eubanks netted the winner.
Cape stands at 2-7 this season and was scheduled to face Leavitt next.
