We’re barely a third of the way through the local high school winter sports seasons, but we already have some snapshots of what might be a very good year for some squads.

The Scarborough boys basketball team is 3-2 and ranked seventh in the first Heal Point standings of the season. They have an 11-point loss to undefeated Deering and a narrow two-point setback to Bonny Eagle. Otherwise the Red Storm are proving to be a force in the Southwestern Maine Activities Association (Western Maine Class A).

The boys host Kennebunk (3-2) tomorrow night.

The Scarborough girls are 2-3 and ranked 11th in the West A Heal standings. They suffered a loss to top-ranked and unbeaten Deering and they had another setback against once-beaten and third ranked Gorham.

The Red Storm visit Kennebunk (3-2) tomorrow evening.

The South Portland boys have won four straight games after a season opening loss to Bonny Eagle. The Red Riots faced off against Noble (1-4) on Tuesday night and they travel to Portland to take on a powerful Cheverus team on Friday.

The South Portland girls are 3-2 with their only losses coming against No. 1 Deering and No. 2 Biddeford. The Red Riots are currently ranked sixth and they’ll be a force right into Western Class A tournament action.

They host Cheverus tomorrow evening and they entertain unbeaten McAuley on Saturday.

Cape Elizabeth’s boys basketball team is 3-3 and ranked seventh in the first Heal Point standings of the season. The Capers opened with two victories but they’ve lost three of their last four games. They looked to rebound with a home contest against Yarmouth last night before traveling to Wells tomorrow evening.

The Cape Elizabeth girls are 0-6 but they’ve played hard all season and nearly knocked off York just before the holiday break. They were at Yarmouth on Tuesday and they host Wells on Friday night.

The Scarborough boys ice hockey team is ranked second in the West A Heal Point standings with a 5-1 record and the Red Storm certainly appear to be one of the teams to beat this season. Their only loss was a 5-4 setback against the defending Class A champions from Cheverus.

The South Portland hockey team is 2-3 on the season with wins coming against Sanford and Massabesic. The Red Riots took on Westbrook on Tuesday and they are scheduled to face Deering today.

The Cape Elizabeth ice hockey team is 1-5 after a rough stretch of games against some very good opponents. The Capers stumbled a bit early on last season before winning their second straight Class B state championship and they could very well turn things around in much the same way this year with 12 games remaining on the schedule.

The Scarborough and South Portland boys and girls indoor track teams get their regular seasons started on Saturday at the Portland Expo.

The Cape Elizabeth indoor track teams begin their Western Maine Conference regular season at the University of Southern Maine fieldhouse on Friday.
