Nate Hathaway of Scarborough achieved All-American status recently at the USA Track & Field Cross Country Junior Olympics in Spokane, WA. The 14-year-old freshman at Scarborough High School competed against runners of similar age from all over the country at the national event.
His 23rd-place finish in the 4-kilometer race places the young runner among the best in the nation in the youth boys (13 & 14 years old) division.
To qualify for the Junior Olympics, Hathaway finished second in the Maine state championship meet, and then ninth in the regional meet held in Queensbury, N.Y.
Although Nate is a nationally ranked runner, he does not run for the Scarborough High cross country team, opting instead to pursue his passion for soccer.
This past fall, Nate played on the freshman and junior varsity teams, and trained with the varsity team. He plays premier soccer with the Odyssey Soccer Club, and he also plays lacrosse. Nate starts his cross country training program in late October when the soccer season is almost over. This is the third time Hathaway has participated in the Jr. Olympic cross country championships.
Daniel Ornstein, a middle school student in Scarborough, also qualified for and participated in the Jr. Olympics. Daniel captured 74th place in the 3-kilometer race in the midget boys division (11 and 12 years old).
