Westbrook has designated a number of new overnight parking spots for use during snowstorms to make it more convenient for residents without off-street parking.
Residents will now have the use of nearly 90 new spots in nine parking lots around the city. The city is in the process of putting up signs in these lots designating where residents can park.
The move follows a renewed debate in recent months over whether the city’s parking ban is appropriate. While some residents feel the ban is too strict, public services and public safety personnel believe the ban is necessary for proper snow removal and for keeping the city’s streets open for safety vehicles during emergencies.
The winter parking ban prohibits parking on any city street for more than one hour between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. from Nov. 15 to April 15.
