It was an extremely tough five-day stretch for the Cape Elizabeth ice hockey team. Starting on Tuesday, Dec. 12, the Capers faced three potent challengers beginning with always tough Falmouth, then the defending Class A state champions from Cheverus two nights later, and finally an upstart and very good Biddeford team on Saturday.

The Capers dropped a 4-2 decision to the Yachtsmen. Falmouth took a 2-0 lead in the second period before the Capers fought back to tie the score at 2-2 on goals by Andrew Gibson and Max Foner. The Yachtsmen answered with two more second period scores and they held off a Capers’ rally for the 4-2 victory.

Last Thursday evening saw the Capers take a 1-0 lead over the Stags thanks to a goal by Tom Rich at 3:22 of the middle period. Cheverus responded with two scores of their own and the teams went to the third period with Cheverus holding a 2-1 advantage. Neither team managed to score in the final 15 minutes of play and the Stags persevered for the 2-1 victory.

Lincoln Jordan had 21 saves in net for the Capers.

On Saturday at the Biddeford Ice Arena, the Capers showed the effects of a long week of top-notch hockey as they fell to a more rested Biddeford squad, 11-4.

Ben Lydon, Colby Pearson, Max Foner and Zach Labbe scored the Cape Elizabeth goals.

The South Portland ice hockey team dropped a pair of games over the weekend.

The Red Riots scored what seemed like enough goals before falling by a 9-7 score at Lake Region on Friday and they scored just one goal in a 10-1 home loss to Maranacook on Saturday.

The lone South Portland goal on Saturday was a first period tally by Daniel Maietta that made the score 1-1. It was all Maranacook after that as the first period ended with the Black Bears holding a 4-1 edge before adding six more goals over the second and third periods.

On Friday against the Lakers in a game played at the Bridgton Academy ice arena, the Riots led 3-2 after the opening period thanks to a natural hat trick by Maietta. (Nicholas Griffin picked up a couple assists in that opening 15 minutes and single assists went to Nick Fornwalt and Aiden Boyce.)

Lake Region then scored the three first goals of the middle period to take a 5-3 lead before the Riots answered on a goal by Griffin (from Maietta and Paul Cobb). Griffin scored the final goal of the second period (from Matt Morey and Bobby Basinet) to pull the Riots within one at 6-5.

South Portland then seized the momentum with a pair of goals to open the final period to take a 7-6 lead. Fornwalt had an unassisted tally at 4:24 and Boyce added a score at 5:16 from Fornwalt and James Doria.

The Lakers tied the game midway through the period and then added two more goals in the final three minutes of regulation to earn their first ever varsity win.

South Portland goalie Rob Morong had 16 saves in net for the Riots.
