The Scarborough High boys and girls swim teams both emerged victorious in their first meet of the season. The Red Storm girls eased past Westbrook, 135-47, while the boys slipped by the Blue Blazes, 92-91.
“The girls looked strong despite some key swimmers only doing a few
events,” said Scarborough coach Bill Stone. “We had a lot of state qualifying swims on both ends.”
Individual winners for the Red Storm girls included: Brittanie Bradley (200 free and 100 breast), Hanna Flewelling (200 IM), Allison Rogers (50 free and 100 free), Gayle Bufo (1-meter diving), Nicole Harmon (100 fly and 100 back), and Sarah Reynolds (500 free).
“Gayle Bufo qualified for states in her first meet and broke the school record for six dives. Michaela Wood got second in diving in her first meet ever,” Stone noted.
The boys needed strong swims in every event to edge Westbrook and that’s just what they got.
“The boys won the meet based on all swims. The thing that helped us win was the third, fourth, and fifth place finishes,” said Coach Stone. “The divers (Sam Ledue and Tom Green, both new to diving) going 1-2 in the diving event was crucial for us to win as well.”
Individual winners for the Red Storm boys included: Kaycee Stevens (50 free), Sam Ledue (1-meter diving), Nick Twomey (100 back), and Jon Russell (100 breast).

Boys Swimming
Coach: Bill Stone (fourth Season)

Key veterans: Bryant Shannon, Sr. Captain; Jon Russell, Sr. Captain, Kaycee Stevens, Sr.; Nick Twomey, So; Tom Spencer, So.
Key newcomers: Adam Saltz, Fr.
Coach’s outlook:”We lost a lot of key guys that were big point scorers for us. We’ll stay very competitive in our conference. I think we have a good shot. The head of the class will probably be Greely and Cape; Cheverus will be pretty good too. I think the boys are going to be pretty even. The meets should be pretty close – I hope.”
Girls Swimming
Coach: Bill Stone (fourth season)
Winter 2005-06 regular season record: 6-1
How did last season end: Won second straight Southwestern North Division Title; finished third at Class A state championship.

Key newcomers: We have a strong group of freshmen coming in that are versatile with all the strokes.”
Coach’s outlook: “The girls are going to be competitive. We are missing some kids because they decided to do club, but hat happens to other schools as well. We have a lot of depth and we have girls that can win events. I think we are going to be strong again this year. The teams that will be top in our class will be Falmouth, Cape and Greely and other teams are in the mix as far as competing. Everyone will be competitive.”
