New bank adds to heat fund
Ken Acker, TruChoice Federal Credit Union president and chief executive officer, recently presented Buxton Selectwomn Jean Harmon with a check for $500 to support Buxton’s Keep The Heat On Program.
“We haven’t even opened our doors yet, and we feel like a part of the community,” said Acker, referring to the credit union’s new 2,700-square-foot Buxton branch. “That’s why we felt strongly about making this donation.” The branch, located at the intersection of routes 202 and 22, is scheduled to open in mid- January.
Buxton’s Keep The Heat On Program was founded in 2005 by resident Ed Newell to help local residents in need heat their homes through the winter months. In cooperation with local fuel company Redding Oil, the program has been able to help more than 30 Buxton residents. “Many people who need help go through the town’s General Assistance,” said Harmon, who also sits on the Keep The Heat On committee. “But there are some people who are too proud to ask for help. They are the ones we hear about and help through this program.”
More than $9,000 has been raised, including a $5,000 grant from Narragansett Number One Foundation to help sustain the program. Even students of Hanson and Frank Jewett Elementary Schools have become involved in the fundraising efforts. Students set up a bottle drive that has raised $125 so far. Tracking of the bottles and funds has been incorporated into the students’ math lessons.
